The Edge of the Frame

Short Film 2026

THE EDGE OF THE FRAME follows Simon Blair as he pursues a vision of rock climbing as a dance form, a ballet in the sky.

On a multi-year quest to Europe he meets a ballet dancer, a breakdancer, a bouldering champion and an Italian explorer who help him on this journey. Ultimately, he realizes the real quest is to become a human living in harmony with nature at a time when climate change is a looming threat to all.

Words from Simon Blair:

It’s been a true adventure to create this film with German cinematographer Martin Buchauer and shoot it in many different European countries and climbing areas.

Climbing shares a lot with ballet and with break dancing as it turns out and climbing becomes a richer experience with grace, poise and some subtlety too.

Many thanks to the climbers and dancers who joined us for this cinematic adventure. Rosie Mackley, a Scottish ballerina who started Ballet4Climbers during Covid.

Kristian Mensa a Czech break dancer and illustrator who draws with his body on the floor and dances with his pen on the paper.

Helene Wolf a strong climber from Hamburg and German bouldering champion who loves nature and shared her passion for horse riding with us too.

And Alex Bellini an inspiring Italian explorer and adventurer whose feats are too numerous to mention here and who I met in Sydney after he rowed solo across the entire Pacific Ocean!

We all have our own oceans to cross. And it’s possible, if we choose, to gracefully dance across them!!
